Three studies of the folded cage, triptych
84 x 59 cm each
Carbon toner on paper

Sketches of Bacon
Pioneer Building
Sydney, Australia, 2013

Sketches of Bacon was a group exhibition in response to the Frances Bacon Five Decades survey exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

These prints of carbon toner are hand made fold by fold, layer over layer and speak of the heavy layers of oil that was born out of Bacon’s combination of chaos and discipline. I found parallels between Bacon’s technique of folding photographs to distort figures and my own experiments with folded and distorted laser prints. Utilising the distortion through folding, these works pay homage to the prismatic cages that Bacon so often painted around his figures, and owe their form to Three studies of the male back in particular.
